what is kava?
Kava is a traditional drink made from the roots of the Piper methysticum plant, native to the Pacific Islands. It is prepared by grinding or pounding the root, mixing it with cold water or coconut milk, and then straining it. The drink is known for its earthy taste and for causing a mild numbing sensation in the mouth.
Kava is a plant in the pepper family. The name kava is from Tongan and Marquesan and it means “bitter”. Many people who enjoy traditional kava enjoy the earthy bitter taste, and each part of the root has a slightly different taste and effect.
Kava contains calming properties due to its kavalactones- relaxing muscles, reducing stress and for some- they experience the lightest of euphorias.
Because of these properties, many people enjoy it as an alcohol-free social drink. You’ll find that many people that visit us are in active recovery or simply don’t drink alcohol.
Kava can be enjoyed in mixed drink form- using its extract form and then combined with nut milks or shrubs- creating something that people who don’t like bitter but still want the effects of kava can enjoy. Others may even use a bit of chocolate almond milk to cut the bitterness to something they find more manageable.
Our traditional kava is hand-pressed. Other kava Mixed drinks that we may have will include an extract, and our shrubs are prepared in-house.
Kava is not to be mixed with alcohol or medications that affect the liver- it is like most things- meant to be enjoyed responsibly.
